Work Note for <Monad> - Kim, Young- soo (K-Soo)

The series of <Monad> is a work that has begun with the inspiration from the song 'Where are we going from here' by the British music band Blackmore's Night. It’s a song beginning with ‘On a long road, miles to go. It's winding and cold and it's covered with snow. But I ask you what we all want to know. Where are we going from here?’ In addition, the mysterious image of the song has reminded me of the curiosity on the ‘ancient mystery’ that I had when I was a child staring at the stars in the night sky.

Countless images collected through googling resemble to the stars in the sky at night. Like stars, they also have different place and different time respectively. They also look alike from a distance, but when they come closer they reveal different daily lives and stories. Usually interested in the universe, I wanted to express the 'primeval energy' held by starlight. The <Monad> work begins with imagining the ‘infinite past’, i.e. the ‘beginning of the universe’. The <Monad> work collects the images scattered in the space of internet through ‘googling[1]’ and makes them into a work. Unlike conventional photographic techniques, it uses an image montage method that condenses thousands of images. The images crushed into tiny particles are tangled and overlapped each other, forms disappear, and they become an abstract shape stained with colors and lines. Digital images are the objects that have been shaped from things into colors (pixels).

<Monad> disintegrates the shape of the embodied image and returns it to its original color. Different from the usual photography procedure that expresses concepts through the representation of the world, this is a way to leave only 'color' in reverse from the existing images mediated by the concept. Mediated concepts exist only in the procedure but are perceived, even invisible, to have been melted into color. The left 'color' that has been purified is symbolized as a 'monad' from which material elements have been removed. <Monad> is a concept that was determined as the ‘basic unit’ of all beings by Leibnitz, a German philosopher in the 17th century. According to him, 'monad' is simple and indivisible, and unlike the atom, it is an immaterial substance and its essential function is representation. Representation is what the external thing is included in the internal thing, and <Monad> has relation to diversity with outer world by this function despite of its simplicity. The <Monad> work is a try to imagine the internal thing, i.e. the true nature of the world, through the images symbolized externally at this moment. As a way to do this, we would look for the traces in the shape of the image appearing in the phenomenal world, and so I use the method of eliminating the shape through the torsion of images and leaving only the color that is the trace (feeling) of images. Coloring work adopts ORE Method[2] which is a unique digital imaging process only by the artist.

Most of the knowledge of modern people comes from 'googling’. Regardless of fields, they come to use google search without fail when they have something curious. It contains all the present knowledge and information including those of the past and provides most of phenomena of our society in real time. The current appearance we recognize is one that is reflexed through the window of ‘googling’. Whether true or not, the reflexed appearance is the appearance and phenomenon of our society. The <Monad> work is to take photos of the world not through the lens of camera but through ‘googling’, the lens of modern people’s recognition. The distinction between fiction and reality is ambiguous in the world of ‘googling’, and the virtual world becomes reality and even rules us. The virtual images are ‘desire’ and ‘interpretation of reality’ rather than ‘false’. The task of <Monad> refuses ‘it has existed’ which is the ontological property of images, but paradoxically makes us to imagine the root of the existence by removing the evidence of the being (shape). Birth and death of beings are not only the absolute truth of the world but the truth of unknown world that human beings cannot know. The unknown truth is not what to be perceived but to be imagined. Casting the question ‘Where we came from and where we are going to?’, <Monad> is providing us with a stage to think of the ‘existential value of men’ who get being weak by the digital civilization.

[1] 'Googling' means all internet search methods including Google.

[2] As the 7 kinds of image processing process of the researcher, ORE means the method that twists images and leaves only color.

(K-Soo)

<모나드(2017)> 시리즈는 영국의 음악밴드 ‘Blackmore’s Night’ 의 ‘Where are we going from here'라는 노래에서 영감을 얻어 시작된 작업이다.
